The Lord of Misrule

A raucous holiday play to raise funds for Utah’s Homeless

The Lord of Misrule is an irreverent work of interactive theater being produced at The Alliance Theater. The play itself is a fundraiser for The Road Home Homeless Shelter. It is written and directed by RJ Walker and starring Ammar Al Saffar, Breanna Alonzo, Zay Alvarez, Connor Bond and Alton Phonepraseuth.

The Lord of Misrule is an ancient Christmas tradition dating back to Christmas’ origins as Saturnalia. A beggar is crowned the Lord of Misrule to preside over drunken mobs and Christmas parties. The Lord of Misrule would often make demands of local gentry (usually more food or booze) and if the gentry failed to meet the demands, the Lord of Misrule would incite a riot against the gentry, destroying property and threatening violence. Basically, forced Christmas charity.

This play brings that energy into 2021 by giving the audience interactive power over the actors. At the top of each act, audience members donate money to The Road Home Shelter to make the actors perform in strange and ridiculous ways. The demands with the highest donations are given special priority. It’s a play with micro-transactions that benefit Utah’s homeless population

You can also give directly to The Road Home through their website.

The play is free to attend. Donations will be accepted via the livestream, and those attending in person at Alliance Theater are requested to bring In-Kind donations (What is needed is listed at the bottom)

Showtimes are December 15th and 16th at 8pm MST

The play will be held at the Alliance Theater, 602 E 500 S Suite E101, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Live Streaming will be available for those that register with a livestream ticket.
